In the 2004 storm season, hurricanes landed crushing blows along the eastern coastline of the U.S. The destruction was monumental, making last year’s hurricane season the costliest ever experienced by our nation with property losses estimated at 42 billion dollars. From June to November each year, the hurricane season brings with it the distinct possibility that the sea could bring such wrath upon coastal areas once again. If the watery wrath of Charley, Frances, Ivan and Jeanne taught us anything, it is that taking proper preventive measures can be priceless. Being prepared can make the difference between minor damage and total devastation. For those dealing with the aftermath a hurricane leaves behind, protective footwear is an absolute must. In conditions of flooding, waterproof bootspreferably ones with steel toesare required to ensure the safety of anyone who must trek through the destruction zone. In response to the massive hurricane season of 2004, the Florida State Emergency Response Team issued a statement of recommendations, including the use of steel toed boots for those involved in cleanup. The Centers for Disease Control recommend watertight boots with a steel toe and insole for workers in flooded areas. To keep feet dry and safe, rubber boots or other heavy type waterproof boots should be worn. This way, any diseases or germs carried in the water, as well as any snakes or other vermin, will be kept at bay. The possibility of electric shock is also greatly lessened by wearing boots that provide a layer of insulation between your body and flood waters. The water that hurricanes bring upon coastal areas can also cause flooding inland as the storm makes its move. So, the same type of precautions are also important for those living in the Midwest and other areas that often can be drenched with rain in the days following a major hurricane.
